Wenn Morgenthaler Posaune spielt, entsteht sozusagen der Rohling einer Improvisation, Art Brut.Morgenthaler treibt sein Instrument schon mal an die musikalischen und physischen Grenzen, lässt Melodie und Sound in selten gehörter Intensität und Souveränität miteinander kommunizieren.Manchmal werden die Klänge der Posaune durch elektronische Effekte dermassen verfremdet, dass der Ursprung nur schwer auszumachen ist. Mal taucht ein formal traditionell gedachtes Lied auf oder es wird ganz improvisiert. Es fasziniert die Leichtigkeit, mit welcher er den Prozess des ” im Moment komponieren” hörbar macht. Durch den eigenwilligen Einsatz von Loops und analogen Effekten erweitert Morgenthaler die Möglichkeiten seines Instruments, definiert es neu und macht die Musik zu einem intellektuellen wie sinnlichen Abenteuer. Morgenthaler verleiht der Musik einen sehr persönlichen und vielschichtigen, modernen Ausdruck. – Wie das klingt? Nach zeitgenössischem Jazz, der sich auch beim Rock,  Pop und der Worldmusic bedient. Ruhige Momente, wo Morgenthaler’s Posaune an die schwarzen Soulstimmen erinnert, wechseln mit vertrackten Grooves und trashigen Sounds ab. Das Überraschungsmoment ist hoch. Immer wieder blitzen lausbübische Ideen, Ironien und viel Spaß bei seinen Kompositionen und Improvisationen durch, die unauffällig mit viel Technik rüberkommen.

When Morgenthaler plays his trombone he creates a blueprint of improvisation: a raw and primitive uniqueness operating beyond traditional musical boundaries! It is this Art Brut approach that characterises his music enabling its distinctiveness to transcend all musical barriers. Morgenthaler often pushes his instrument to its musical and physical limits, allowing melody and sound to communicate in rarely heard combinations of intensity and confidence. At times the sound of the trombone is alienated through electronic effects to such an extent the origin of the music cannot easily be identified. It is this „musical space“ where originality  and traditional songs are melded into one pure improvisation. The audience is often fascinated by the lightness with which he makes audible the process of „composing in the moment“. By applying his unique use of loops and analogue effects he broadens his instrumental possibilities thereby turning it into an intellectual and sensory adventure. Morgenthaler’s music is extraordinarily personalised and multilayered.  It is a highly modern expression of individuality. How does it sound? It is a complex fusion of contemporary jazz working with elements of rock, pop and world music. At times it is marked by silent pauses.  At others, Morgenthaler’s trombone is reminiscent of black soul voices alternating between edgy complex grooves and trashy sounds. His compositions are influenced by rouguish ideas, ironies and a lot of spontaneous fun. The element of surprise in his music is high.  And while the musical oscillations constantly surprise the audience, they are not simply ad hoc.  Rather this understated quality is backed by a high level of technical knowledge and proficiency. Quand Robert Morgenthaler joue du trombone, apparait pour ainsi dire l’ébauche d’une improvisation, de l’art brut. Il mène son instrument jusqu’à ses limites physiques et musicales, laisse communiquer entre eux sons et mélodies d’une rare intensité et souveraineté. Parfois le son est modifié par des effets électronique, si bien que l’on peine à entendre l’original. Apparaissent à l’occasion des mélodies très traditionnelles dans leurs conceptions, ou alors complètements improvisées. Il impressionne par sa facilité à rendre audible le concept de composition instantanée. Grace à l’utilisation de loops et d’effets analogues, Morgenthaler élargit le champ des possibilités de son instrument, les redéfinit et fait de la musique une aventure intellectuelle et sensuelle. Il confère à la musique une expression moderne, très personnelle et hétérogène. – Comment est ce que cela sonne-t-il? Comme du jazz contemporain, s’inspirant du rock, de la pop et de la worldmusic. Les moments paisible, ou le trombone nous rappelle les voix des chanteuses soul afro-américaines, alternent avec les grooves complexes et les sons trash.
